<p>Holding the WWE title is the most prestigious position a WWE superstar can find themselves in but it is not the title that defines the superstar but the superstar who defines the title. Here are 15 of the most memorable title reigns in the history of the WWE.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>15. Kurt Angle (2000-2001)</strong></h2>

<p>Kurt angle proved that he was a once in a lifetime superstar by being at the very helm of WWE at a time when legends such as The Rock, Stone Cold, Undertaker, etc were all still active and very much at the top of their game. This reign included many memorable title bouts including the barn burner at Armageddon 2000 which to this day stands as one of the best matches in WWE.</p>

<p>The women’s title was nothing more than a passing thought since the likes of Lita and Trish Stratus had retired. It was this title reign that brought back relevance to this title. It was also this title reign that laid the groundwork for the women’s revolution. AJ Lee managed to garner people’s interest like never before and there were times when she was getting a better reaction than the men’s title picture.</p>

<p>While it is great to see two large men duke it out in the squared circle, it is the same old formula that has been repeated since the inception of wrestling. Small men were not supposed to make it big in WWE and yet Rey Mysterio not only captured the title at an epic Royal Rumble surviving for 62 minutes but also gloriously carried the title for a year having legendary rivalries against the likes of Eddie Guerrero and Batista.</p>

<p>No list of title reigns will ever be complete without a mention of the ‘Great One’. This period is considered some of the best in WWE history and it is in no small part due to the innate charisma and physicality of this bonafide WWE legend. He had to follow an awesome title reign by Stone Cold but he did it with aplomb and carried the title to even greater heights.</p>

<p>She is small even by the women’s division standards and yet has been the most surprising and talented champion of recent years. Instead of using her physical stature to play the underdog, she managed to beautifully portray a villain who bullied a woman many times her size. That takes talent and this woman has loads of it.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10. Bruno Sammartino (1963-1971)</strong></h2>

<p>Yes you read that right. His reign lasted over 7 years and you would think that by the end of it people had gotten bored of him as the champion but you couldn’t be more wrong. Back in the days everyone actually believed that wrestling was real and the person who defeated Bruno had to be given bodyguards as the people actually would hate him and would have probably harmed him physically for taking the belt away from Bruno.</p>

<p>In the 80s, Hulk Hogan was the biggest name in WWE. To follow Hulk’s reign was a big ask and anyone else would have failed massively. Macho Man not only was able to be a champ in a convincing manner but actually made us feel that he deserved the championship. He had the charisma and talent to stand toe to toe with the Hulkster that led to one of the best feuds of the 80s.</p>

<p>Before Bret Hart came along, the WWE landscape was dominated by big muscular men. It was Bret that proved that smaller guys with more technical skills can be an equal draw as well. This reign is iconic because many of the superstars to follow him that we love, like Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, and Daniel Bryan would have never become the champs had not Bret opened the door for them all those years back.</p>

<p>WWE was not in a very good place and was losing some of its best talents to rival promotions and they needed someone who could carry the company to better days. Shawn stood up to the task and delivered admirably. It is much more difficult to play the bad guy than the good guy and Shawn shone as the villain during this period. His feud with Stone Cold was what catapulted WWE to its current level of success.</p>

<p>Wrestling was going through a period of dullness as the same old formula kept repeating at every WWE show. Every possible feud had been seen and something new was needed and Brock delivered. The crazy thing about Brock is that he is legitimately scary and actually made the title relevant. You genuinely feared for his opponents and suddenly the whole title picture came alive.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Triple H (2000)</strong></h2>

<p>Despite what many think nothing was handed to Triple H on a silver platter. The man worked as hard as anyone and took on the roles no one else wanted. The quintessential heel of the attitude era, he made the whole antagonist-protagonist dynamic come to life in a WWE ring. Without him, megastars like Stone Cold, The Rock, Kurt Angle and John Cena would have never achieved the heights they did. This reign was a great showcase of his skills.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Hulk Hogan (1984-1988)</strong></h2>

<p>This title reign is the reason behind WWE becoming the juggernaut it is today. When one man’s title reign defines the very existence of a company you know that it was something special. During this time he headlined multiple Wrestlemanias and laid the groundwork for a company that supports so many households worldwide and entertains an even bigger number. He was a true giant in the land of giants.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. John Cena (2006-2007)</strong></h2>

<p>The man that carried WWE during the PG era, this reign was a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. He was the complete package as he had the mic chops, looks and wrestling acumen. Many might think of the PG era as lame when compared to the attitude era but this man was able to make even that entertaining. His feuds with Edge are epic and he can light up any arena even today.</p>

<p>Some day in the future WWE will regret letting this man go. Whether he will ever wrestle in a WWE ring is still hotly debated by wrestling fans. This reign began at a time when Cena had become monotonous and there was no one else charismatic enough to lead the company. CM Punk took the baton and ran with it to some of the most entertaining wrestling the modern generation has seen. This reign lasted 434 days and every day was a blast.</p>







<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Stone Cold Steve Austin (1998)</strong></h2>

<p>There would be no WWE without this title reign and wrestling would be a lot different than what we have right now. The pop that he received every time the sound of breaking glass was made is a testament to how much he was loved. He was ubercool and a super badass and the fact that he managed to eclipse The Rock is a testament to this man’s legacy. His feud with Mr. McMahon will always be the most entertaining wrestling anyone has seen. He was a true legend and this was an equally legendary title reign.</p>
