AEW Double or Nothing will be the second PPV in this series, after last year’s highly successful edition that announced the arrival of All Elite Wrestling to the scene. The PPV was followed by three more events, before AEW made their way to national television.
Double or Nothing was originally scheduled to take place in MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, in a quite grand fashion, but all those plans were dropped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is still going on with an expensive buy-rate of $50 for an empty-arena show, which hasn’t gone down well with the fans.
The card looks quite promising overall, with several high-stake matches, along with Mike Tyson making his first appearance in AEW.
We look at AEW Double or Nothing 2020 match card and give our predictions on how the PPV will go down.
Private Party vs Best Friends
A rather random matchup to the show, the two under-the-radar tag teams will feature in a match for the No.1 contenders for the tag-titles, currently held by Kenny Omega and Hangman Page.
Best Friends have been involved in several Dynamite episodes, as their partner Orange Cassidy will be joining the Casino Ladder Match set to take place later in the night.
This should be a fun match, as both the teams are known for their athletic, fast-paced encounters. Both the teams are babyfaces as well, which should usually be a problem for the crowd, but with no-one in attendance, it shouldn’t matter.
Best Friends are quite prominent on AEW shows currently, and they should win this one for sure.
Prediction: Best Friends win.
Dustin Rhodes vs Shawn Spears
A late addition to the show saw Dustin Rhodes and Shawn Spears sign up for a singles encounter at the show. Both the superstars have been dangling in the mid-card for a while now, and Spears is slowly building up some momentum.
Rhodes has played the role of a grizzled veteran so far in AEW and will like to elevate the former WWE US Champion. Spears has had his issues with Rhodes’ brother Cody for quite some time, and Cody even took him down in the very first round of the TNT Tournament.
This should be an easy win for the former Tye Dillinger.
Prediction: Shawn Spears wins
Dr Britt Baker vs Kris Statlander
The two women were part of a Fatal Four Way on Dynamite, which saw Hikaru Shida pick up the win by taking down Penelope Ford. These two ladies were busy settling their matters outside, as Baker applied a submission maneuver and refused to let go of it, even after the match ended.
Baker has risen as a star in the Women’s Division these past few months, and she should be in the discussions for the Women’s title pretty soon.
Statlander has been impressive herself, but a victory for Baker will help her build more momentum and possibly enter the title scene once again.
Baker suffered an injury this week on Dynamite and as per latest reports, if the injury is serious, she might be pulled out of the PPV and could also be sidelined for around nine months or more.
Prediction: Kris Statlander wins
MJF vs Jungle Boy
The card has few great matches but has some absolutely outlandish encounters, like this one here. MJF will be making his return to the Squared Circle at the PPV and will take on the member of the Jungle Express, who’s known for his small frame but a highly athletic persona.
MJF was one of the biggest deals in AEW during his feud with Cody, but that has fallen over to wayside pretty soon. MJF is a solid talent, and AEW should be utilizing him much more than what they are doing currently.
Prediction: MJF wins
AEW Women’s Championship: Nyla Rose (c) vs Hikaru Shida
Nyla Rose hasn’t been in action much in the last few weeks, probably due to the COVID-19 situation. She returned to Dynamite and was immediately given a new challenge in the form of Hikaru Shida, who hasn’t lost a single match this calendar year and is currently on top of the rankings in the Women’s Division.
Rose attacked Shida backstage during a recent episode of Dynamite, which led to this match being a No DQ match. Shida has great chemistry with almost anyone in AEW and should carry Rose for a great brutal encounter here.
It is tough to predict the winner, but AEW wouldn’t want to dethrone Rose right now.
Prediction: Nyla Rose retains.
Casino Ladder Match: Fenix vs Luchasaurus vs Orange Cassidy vs Kip Sabian vs Darby Allin vs Scorpio Sky vs Frankie Kazarian vs Colt Cabana vs TBA
The entire mid-card of AEW will be featured in this match, which will have a Casino gimmick attached to it, after we had a similar battle royal at Double or Nothing last year. The Battle Royal was to determine one of the contestants for the AEW World Championship, while this one is to crown a new No.1 contender.
There are nine participants, all possessing different talents. There are the athletic ones in Darby Allin and Fenix, the big guy Luchasaurus, while Cabana, Kazarian, Sky will be more of traditional wrestling based participants.
There is one mystery entrant in the matchup, who could be a new signee for the company. Could it be someone from the recent releases in WWE? Only time will tell.
Prediction: Darby Allin wins
TNT Championship: Lance Archer vs Cody Rhodes
It is a shame that this match has to take place in front of zero fans, as this feud shaped up pretty well in the last few months. Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts is doing some amazing work as Archer’s mouthpiece and has helped him become a legit threat on the roster.
Cody’s character has somewhat descended down to a pitiful babyface, who keeps getting attacked by random heels every week. This feud went personal after Roberts used his old trick of bringing a snake to the ring, and put it over Cody’s wife Brandi Rhodes.
It is tough to see who wins this matchup, but Archer is being built up as an invincible and a brute force of nature, so he should be taking the title home.
Prediction: Lance Archer
Stadium Stampede Match: The Inner Circle vs The Elite
While the entire mid-card is involved in the Ladder Match, the upper-card will be featured in this unique Stadium Stampede matchup. With a football ground at their disposal due to owners also having the rights of an NFL side, the match will be AEW’s answer to WWE’s cinematic matches.
All the ten participants are highly entertaining personalities, who can put on a wrestling clinic as and when required. The Elite had their issues with Hangman Page and Matt Jackson not getting along, and it will be interesting to see how that pans out during this encounter.
Babyfaces usually take the win in such matches, as it doesn’t hurt the heels as much as it would in a normal matchup.
Prediction: The Elite wins.
AEW World Championship: Jon Moxley (c) vs Brodie Lee
The main event of the evening has been entirely overshadowed by the Elite vs Inner Circle drama. Moxley will take on Lee, which is a throwback to their time with WWE as Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper respectively.
Lee is undefeated in AEW ever since his debut, but it’s hard to see AEW taking the title from Moxley at this juncture. AEW booked themselves into a corner with this move, and how this goes down will be interesting to see.
The Exalted One will look to bag the gold belt around his waist, but Moxley should somehow overcome him this time around.
Prediction: Jon Moxley retains
