Current WWE NXT Champion Adam Cole has just celebrated having the longest reign of any NXT Champion in history.

However, Cole’s WWE contact is supposed to expire in September and he has yet to re-sign. This is fueling rumors that he might be on his way out of the company. Specifically, people are speculating Cole could be looking to go to AEW where his current girlfriend, Britt Baker, is signed.

Cole is set to defend the NXT Championship against Velveteen Dream this Sunday at the NXT Takeover: In Your House pay-per-view. As part of his media rounds to promote the match, he spoke to CBS Sport’s Brent Brookhouse.

Brookhouse asked Cole about the rumors swirling around Cole’s future and Cole told him that he’s focused on what’s currently happening and not “what’s next.”

“Right now, and I mean this because a lot of people say, ‘Oh, what’s next? What are you going to do next? You’re NXT Champion, what’s your next goal?’ My goal is to keep the NXT championship,” Cole told Brookhouse.

“I think holding onto the NXT championship for as long as possible and making sure this record can and will never be broken is my end-game goal,” he added.

Cole said he loved NXT and was proud of the brand and the accomplishments he has had in it – including both his long reign and his role as leader of the faction, The Undisputed Era.

He also said that he believes NXT will continue to become bigger and better in the next few years.

“It’s going to keep growing and growing and getting bigger and bigger,” said Cole.

“I’m very proud to be a part of that. I just want to continue trying to solidify myself as being the greatest NXT champion of all-time,” he added.
