AEW Dynamite made history last night in Austin Texas when Nyla Rose was finally able to overcome AEW Women’s World Champion Riho.
Riho was able to defeat The Native Beast to become AEW’s first-ever Women’s Champion back in October and it remained the only loss that Rose had ever suffered in an AEW ring. This all changed last night when Rose was able to use her sit-out Beast Bomb to overcome Riho and her 13 years of in-ring experience to become the new Women’s Champion.
This win makes history not only for AEW but in wrestling as a whole since Nyla Rose now becomes the first-ever transgender wrestler to win a championship at a main promotion. Rose has always been outspoken about the fact that she’s transgender and has used it as part of her story outside of the ring.
Last night’s victory was a huge step forward for the inter-gender community, for Rose as an athlete and for AEW who are trusting their Championship in the hands of The Native Beast.
The moment was almost ruined by the fact that long time commentator and WWE legend Jim Ross proclaimed that Rose was the “King of the Mountain” following the victory, which was called out by a number of fans online who felt the need to stand up for the star.
Jim Ross himself has since responded to the criticism.
AEW’s Women’s Division has gained a lot of scrutiny over the past few months given the issues that have been spotlighted in the division, but following Rose’s victory she headed backstage where Big Swole, Kris Statlander, Dr. Britt Baker and even The Bunny were waiting to show that there was strength and depth in the AEW Women’s Division, to the point that the women could be competing on the same level as NXT in as little as a year’s time.
