AJ Styles was the winner of the Intercontinental Championship Tournament held earlier this month, beating Daniel Bryan on the SmackDown before the Backlash pay-per-view.
Styles did not defend his championship at Backlash, and on this weekend’s episode of SmackDown, he was beaten in a non-title match by the debuting Matt Riddle.
Now, WWE has announced the first contender for Style’s title. Styles will be defending his newly won Intercontinental Championship against Drew Gulak on the June 26 episode of SmackDown.
Gulak had also participated in the Intercontinental Championship tournament but was beaten by Bryan. He and Bryan are training partners, however, and it’s expected that Bryan will be in his corner during the match.
Meanwhile, WWE also announced a segment with Sheamus on next week’s SmackDown. Sheamus is currently in a feud with Jeff Hardy, the two clashed during the Backlash pay-per-view with Sheamus coming out victorious.
It’s expected that Hardy and Sheamus will have at least one more match in their feud, likely to take place on July 19 at Extreme Rules. The segment on next week’s SmackDown will likely build towards the storyline between the two leading towards the pay-per-view.
