AJ Styles won the WWE Championship back in November when WWE came to the United Kingdom and he was able to defeat Jinder Mahal in Manchester, England.
Styles has since been able to overcome every challenger in his path over the past ten months which has included four back to back matches against his longtime friend and rival Shinsuke Nakamura.
Styles recently broke JBL’s long-standing record as an exclusive Champion on the SmackDown brand, the current WWE Champion has held the title for 281 days and defends his title on Sunday night at SummerSlam against Samoa Joe in perhaps his toughest task to date.
It definitely hasn’t been an easy reign for Styles, who has been pushed to the limit a number of times throughout the past year, against the likes of Rusev and Jinder Mahal but Samoa Joe could definitely be his toughest opponent since the former Impact Wrestling stars have taken their entire feud to a personal level over the past few weeks.
JBL’s record had stood for more than 13 years but the former World Champion was the first to congratulate Styles on his achievement on Twitter.
My record has been broken and I Could not be more proud of @AJStylesOrg -a world class individual and athlete, looking forward to watching this incredible performer Sunday at @WWE Summerslam. pic.twitter.com/VjT33wKsVj

AJ Styles is currently 13th in the list of longest reigning combined Championship reigns with the WWE Championship since he’s held the title for 421 days altogether. He is just one place behind CM Punk who held the title for a combined 463 days throughout his two reigns, one of which lasted for a record 434 days.
It is unknown if Styles’ incredible reign will continue this weekend, but the former Impact Wrestling star has been the shining light on SmackDown Live ever since the brand split back in 2016 and will continue to be so with or without the WWE Championship in the future.
