AJ Styles is the reigning WWE Champion and he’s been the focal point on SmackDown Live ever since he won the title back in November, the same can’t be said for Brock Lesnar who won the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 33 and hasn’t defended the title as often as full-time stars like Styles.
In a recent interview with Noelle Foley from Ringside Collectables, the former TNA superstar was able to share his thoughts on Brock Lesnar and his lack of title defenses over the past year.
“I don’t care what anybody says, Brock Lesnar is what we call a draw. People they come to see Brock Lesnar and the fact that he hasn’t defended in a while, that’s on WWE. That’s on Kurt Angle and everybody else who has anything to do with it. I do what I do. I’m a fighting Champion like you said, I’m gonna defend my Championship, I’m gonna give the Championship the respect it deserves.” (transcript via ProWrestling.com)
Lesnar is scheduled to defend his Championship at SummerSlam in August after Roman Reigns was crowned the new number one contender for the title on Raw, which means it will be the fourth meeting between the two men and the third in five months.
Styles defends the WWE Championship against Samoa Joe at “The Biggest Party of The Summer” and as part of the same interview, he was asked about whether he was hoping to break CM Punk’s long-standing record with the Championship.
“Not really. I just have my sights set on retaining the Championship. The guys I’m going up against are freaking amazing, so Rusev, guys coming back, Randy Orton I guess he’s all better since he’s beating up Jeff Hardy. So there’s a lot of guys I’m gonna have to compete with, just hoping to retain.”
