Kia Stevens, more commonly known as Awesome Kong, was a guest during Women’s Wrestling Weekly where she talked about how she came to sign with AEW.
Awesome Kong was a surprise entrant in what was supposed to be a three-woman match during AEW’s Double Or Nothing. She talked a bit about how that happened.
“Only three people on the Earth knew that I was going to be there. We snuck me into the airport, we were seriously incognito with glasses,” recalls Kong.
“We got in, we did the deal; I was nervous and I hadn’t put on the Kong gear in for eons. I hadn’t summoned her. She’s a real person – Kong is real and I hadn’t summoned her in a while. I was in the bathroom… It was a whole process,” she added.
Before returning to the ring with AEW, Kong was not an active wrestler. She was actually, under her real name, making the transition to being an actress as part of the Netflix series GLOW.
Kong said that it was seeing the All In event held in Chicago last September that made her aware of AEW and what they were doing.
“I didn’t know anything about it because I hadn’t been immersed in it – the wrestling world, so I was doing Starrcast and they said everyone is going to the show, and I was thinking that it was just some random indie show,” she recalls.
“I get there and they are at the Sears Centre and the production value is out of this world. I’m like, ‘Wait, I need to be a part of this next time. Someone needs to ask me next time’ and they did. I’m glad they did,” she said.
Kong isn’t just personally happy to be in AEW but she’s also excited for what it can do for women’s wrestling. She says that with AEW it is possible to “put together the greatest female roster ever seen.”
