The Rock is currently the favorite to win the 2019 Royal Rumble, despite not making an appearance in WWE for more than three years.
The former World Champion was thought to be returning to the ring for the first time in more than three years to face Roman Reigns in next year’s main event, but Roman Reigns’ recent revelation means that this match is no longer feasible.
Roman Reigns will be away from the company now for an undetermined amount of time after making it public that he is struggling with Leukemia.
This means that if WWE wants The Rock to make his return to be part of WrestleMania 35 then he needs a new opponent who will be the same kind of draw.
Joe Peisich recently revealed on Barnburner’s No Holds Barred podcast that WWE already has one man in mind when it comes to the main event match against The Rock at next year’s WrestleMania.
“You may ask who would The Rock take on? Well, several sources have said that The Rock — if he does have a match could end up being — and this is huge if this does happen… Bobby Lashley,” he said via Ringsidenews.
Bobby Lashley recently took John Cena’s place in the WWE World Cup after he reportedly refused to travel to The Middle East so WWE has already depended on Lashley so they could decide that he is one of the best options for them at next year’s WrestleMania as well.
Reigns’ recent departure has caused a lot of headaches for WWE when it comes to WrestleMania and now there are a number of matches that could be seen as the main event, so even if The Rock doesn’t main event, at least he will have an opponent.
