Becky Lynch Loves Turning Gender Roles On People’s Head, Explains “The Man” Nickname

Current Raw Women’s Champion, “The Man” Becky Lynch is sharing the cover of ESPN The Magazine with Alison Brie the lead actress of the women’s wrestling-centric Netflix series GLOW.

As part of the promotion for the issue, Lynch spoke to ESPN about her “The Man” nickname. According to Lynch she was a bit surprised at how “nuts” people initially went when she started calling herself “The Man.”

“People lost their minds,” recalls Lynch. “I look at it as the most empowering thing. I’m turning gender roles on their head.”

“For me, the top person, the person of the most extraordinary ability, has always been referred to as “The Man.” And until this moment, that person of exceptional ability has always been a man. So when I broke out and started claiming my status as the top dog in WWE, I started referring to myself as “The Man”, Lynch explained.

According to Lynch, she also loves being “The Man” for the impact she can have in other people’s lives.

“When I’m in the ring, I look out and see people of all different ages, genders, races holding signs for ‘The Man’ or ‘Becky Lynch.’ And, I mean, I kind of came from not much and wasn’t naturally good at anything. And I see all of these different demographics enjoying the message that I’m bringing across,” she said.

ESPN also asked her about her favorite move and, despite the fact she’s known for more elaborate moves – including her arm bar submission hold – she named the basic forearm as her favorite.

“To be honest with you, I just like forearming people,” said Lynch. “It’s so simple, and it always gets a good reaction.”
