Jon Moxley defeated Chris Jericho to become the second AEW World Champion at AEW Revolution. Shortly after the pay-per-view, the State of Florida was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic and AEW had to carry on with audience-less fans which also put a nail in their build for Double Or Nothing.
Moxley won the title on February 29th but it wasn’t until this week that his first challenger was announced. The reigning champion was rolling on towards Double Or Nothing (April 23rd) without any solid opponent hungry for his title, but now the smoke has settled and The Death Rider has found his first major threat in The Exalted One.
On the latest episode of AEW Dynamite, Moxley defeated Frankie Kazarian but the action didn’t quite stop there. The followers of The Dark Order hit the ring and assaulted Moxley. The beatdown was followed by Brodie Lee walking out and making his presence known.
The Exalted One then informed Moxley that he’s not the same person who stood face to face with him in the past (a clear reference to their time in WWE). Lee declared that his fortunes have changed and he is now the leader of The Dark Order, and he wants the gold that’s in Moxley’s possession. The former Wyat Family sidekick then issued a challenge for the AEW World Championship.
It didn’t take long for Lee to force an answer out of the reigning champion – Moxley swiftly accepted it by saying, “Dude, all you had to do was ask.”
The Exalted One then delivered a knee to The Death Rider’s face and the creepers carried out yet another brief assault on their helpless target. The segment came to a close with Lee apparently leaving with Moxley’s title.
Moxley vs Lee for the AEW World Championship has been officially announced for Double Or Nothing. The fact that the upstart promotion has once again chosen a former WWE Superstar as the legitimate challenger has upset a lot of fans across the globe.
