WWE released several employees on April 15th. Now, the company’s biggest celebrity signee from last year, Cain Velasquez has reportedly been released as part of the promotion’s latest budget cuts during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that Velasquez has been let go from his WWE contract. The 2-time UFC Heavyweight Champion hasn’t wrestled any match on television since losing to Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel.
“They haven’t used him since Saudi Arabia. He was on a giant contract so yeah, that’s pretty much it. It was a multi-year deal. Just like everyone else he signed a giant deal and one of the things about those deals is they have the right to cut people.”
In March, Velasquez visited the WWE Headquarters in Stamford and ran into Ronda Rousey who was also there for official matters. The two UFC megastars posed together and Cain shared the picture on social media, making Vince McMahon reportedly upset.
Velasquez getting released by WWE doesn’t essentially mean the end of his pro wrestling career. The UFC Heavyweight Champion could potentially end up in AEW or AAA of which the Mexican promotion seems to be his most likely destination for now.
“I don’t know if he would go back to fight at this stage of the game. I could see him wrestling for AAA, perhaps with AEW, but it’s harder.”
“It’s funny because if he would have signed with AEW they probably would have used him a lot more because those guys were really impressed with his debut.”
“I could definitely see AAA using him. AAA wanted to use him after he signed with WWE. There were at least thoughts of him trying to work with WWE and bringing him in for [AAA] shows, obviously the odds of that happening were very, very slim, but I know AAA had ideas like that.”
Velasquez last wrestled in WWE when he teamed with Humberto Carrillo to defeat The O.C. at a house show in Mexico City, Mexico, in November 2019.
