Jon Moxley (fka Dean Ambrose) quit WWE this past April owing to creative conflicts and made his grand AEW debut a month later at Double Or Nothing.
At the New York Comic-Con, AEW stars shared their respective reasons for joining the upstart promotion. Moxley was the first wrestler to reveal his story and he did so once “Moxley” and “no more scripts” had died down.
“No, no scripts. Hey, you know how many writers were backstage for the two-hour television — the very successful two-hour television show we had the other night? ZERO!”
AEW made their grand TNT debut with Dynamite this past Wednesday against WWE NXT. The brand new show lived up to the hype and fans were left speechless by Jack Hager’s shock debut.
While Moxley’s wife, Renee Young was well aware of her husband’s decision to quit WWE, there was another person who knew about the situation – and he’s none other than reigning AEW World Champion Chris Jericho himself!
“To answer your question for me, it was all just crazy timing. I had been planning on leaving where I was before for a few months and the first guy I told, other than my wife who knew, the first guy who knew was Chris [Jericho]. This was before I knew this was happening, I said, ‘Dude, I’m outta here.”
The ex-Superstar was soon contacted by the co-Executive Vice President of AEW, Cody Rhodes. And the rest, as we all know, is history.
“I said I’m gone, he said, ‘Do you know what you’re gonna do? You’re gonna go with us.’ And I’m like, ‘What?’ Not five minutes later probably I got a call from my friend Cody Rhodes.”
Mox is currently enjoying a top-tier multi-million dollar deal with AEW. His contract is non-exclusive, thus allowing him to work with NJPW.
