The impending WWE vs AEW just got a whole lot bitter as EVP Cody Rhodes has now spoken in response to the recent “blood and guts” comment made by Vince McMahon during the Second Quarter 2019 Earnings call last month.
McMahon had indirectly addressed AEW as “new potential competitor“ while making the remark and Cody has followed the same route to rip Vince and his billion-dollar conglomerate apart.
In the latest AEW video to promote tickets to their October 2 debut television show taping on TNT, Rhodes responded to McMahon’s comments while giving everyone a subtle reminder of the manner in which the entire pro wrestling industry has been built.
“Recently there were some very public comments made about us where we were referred to as ‘blood and guts.’ And it was said with such a braggart candor that you would think the person saying it felt that they were bullet proof. But I wonder, before they said it, if they tasted their own words before they spit them out. Because the entirety of our business is built on blood and guts. Every man or woman who ever stepped foot in the ring — regardless of race, color, creed, political affiliation, sexual identity — has felt blood and guts and PASSION! Because if we don’t care, they don’t care. So if you say we’re blood and guts, I say you bet your ass we are blood and guts.”
Pro wrestling returns to TNT after 18 long years and AEW is set to make history just two days before WWE SmackDown switches over to FOX.
AEW is riding high on fans’ momentum and has been able to deliver three solid pay-per-views in succession.
While it’s a long way to dethroning the mighty WWE, one thing must be made clear at this point – AEW may fail but Cody can’t afford to. Everything is on line for the ex-Superstar and he will possibly go down as the worst failure in pro wrestling history if the upstart promotion is forced to submit to the juggernaut.
