WWE is actively looking to sign more female referees to add to its personnel, according to a report by Casey from Squared Circle Sirens. WWE has a total of 21 active referees including the ones in the NXT roster but has just one female referee currently.
WWE signed Jessika Carr two years ago, and she made her debut in NXT soon after. Carr has recently made more appearances on the main roster as well, including a 24/7 title segment in which Mike Kanellis pinned Maria to win the championship at a clinic.
WWE’s move to bring in more female referees could be a result of AEW signing Aubrey Edwards to a full-time contract yesterday. Aubrey Edwards officiated the match between Chris Jericho and Adam Page for the AEW World Championship, which was the first instance of a major promotion having a woman referee in the main event.
It is interesting to note that Edwards initially worked with NXT in 2018, but wasn’t signed to a full-time role.
According to the report by Casey Michael, WWE offered an officiating role to an indie wrestler recently, who turned it down. He previously reported that WWE is organizing tryouts for referees.
Edwards was praised for her performance in the main event last night, and her animated persona found praise from several fans. She was compared to Red Boots from NJPW, who is similarly renowned for having a very animated presence in the ring.
Elsewhere, WWE superstar Finn Balor unveiled a new look on Instagram this week. He showed off his shaved head and was wearing a Japanese traditional costume in the picture posted on Instagram.
Balor is currently on a hiatus from WWE programming and got married to Veronica Rodriguez last weekend. Balor should return to WWE in about a months’ time, and renew hostilities with Bray Wyatt.
