Former Impact World Champion Brian Cage has put pen to the paper and signed a new deal with All Elite Wrestling, according to SoCal Uncensored. In a report earlier today, the website broke the news of Cage joining AEW and it immediately caught the eye of the professional wrestling community.
Cage wrestled for Impact at their Hard to Kill PPV, where he was squashed by Rob Van Dam. A bloodied Cage left the ring after the quick matchup, and it seems like it was the last match that Cage wrestled for the company.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio added to this story and said AEW was behind the big guy for quite some time and following his departure from the IMPACT, immediately nabbed him and made a part of their frail roster.
“[AEW] probably wanted to debut him as a big surprise. Last night was probably his last match with Impact Wrestling. You know they had always wanted him from the start. He was part of that Southern California crew, but he was under contract with Impact Wrestling and they were pushing him as a top guy.”
Cage appeared at All In in 2018 and has worked with the Young Bucks in the past as well during their time in PWG. Cage is a massive acquisition for the Florida based promotion, who have started to feel the pressure of weekly programming and are in desperate need of fresh faces.
This news comes after Marty Scrull, who was widely pinned to join his Elite buddies at AEW, signed a new contract with Ring of Honor. This must have been a major blow for AEW, who could have benefitted greatly from the Villain.
Brian Cage has a solid look and presence and will be a perfect addition to the upper-card of the company. Cage has also main-evented IMPACT shows in the past and could easily slot in at the top.
