GCW has filed its own trademark for “The Collective”. As we reported last week, WWE has filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the phrase “The Collective”.
WWE’s trademark filing indicates that they intend to use the phrase for a faction or perhaps a tag team. GCW, however, has been calling several of their events “The Collective” for at least a few years.
WWE trademark filing had some people worried about what that might mean for the GCW events. It should be noted, however, that the WWE trademark isn’t for an event so it is likely that it shouldn’t affect GCW.
GCW’s most recent move, however, seems to indicate that they are taking precautions to ensure that they will still be able to hold events called “The Collective”.
The GCW trademark filing, dated December 21, is for “entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests” which indicates that they are thinking of future “The Collective” events.
The filing also lists their “first use” and “first use in commerce dates” as September 2018. This proves that GCW has been using the phrase for a while now and establishes their claim to the trademark.
GCW or Game Changer Wrestling is a New Jersey based wrestling promotion that was founded in 1999. They specialize in hardcore wrestling matches with a mix of MMA fighting.
