Current AEW World Champion Chris Jericho is set to compete in the upcoming Wrestle Kingdom 14. According to Jericho, if he should lose the Wrestle Kingdom match, his opponent Hiroshi Tanahashi will get a match for the AEW Championship.

Jericho’s comments come on the heels of an interview that Tanahashi gave to Tokyo Sports. Tanahashi apparently said that, if he did win their bout at Wrestle Kingdom 14, and Jericho wanted a rematch Jericho should put up the AEW Championship.

NJPW Announcer Chris Charlton translated Tanahashi’s words in English on his Twitter.

Jericho responded to Tanahashi’s words by, in essence accepting the challenge in a video that he posted in his social media accounts.

“You said if you can beat me that you would enter the forbidding portal and request a title shot for the AEW Championship,” said Jericho, addressing Tanahashi.

“I thought it’s a great idea,” continues Jericho. “So, ‘Le Champion’ asked the Chairman of the Board, the owner of AEW, Tony Khan, if it was okay to grant your request, and he said ‘yes.’

“So, if you can beat me in the Tokyo Dome, I will give you a championship match for the AEW Title,” concludes Jericho.

Wrestle Kingdom 14 is a two-day event being produced by NJPW. It will take place at the Tokyo Dome and take place on the evening of both January 4 and 5, 2020.

A January 4 show at the Tokyo Dome is an NJPW tradition and this will be the 29th such show, but only the 14th named “Wrestle Kingdom”. This also marks the first time the show will be held for two nights.
