The WWE Intercontinental Championship is about to turn 40 this September and the company has announced a weeklong celebration of this historic title and the many superstars who have held it.
The first Intercontinental Championship was held by Pat Paterson who won it during a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil back on September 1979. Currently, it is held by Shinsuke Nakamura.
According to the WWE announcement, their digital platforms will feature a weeklong celebration of the Intercontinental Championship which is fondly and proudly known as the “workhorse” title. It has been held by Bret Hart, The Ultimate Warrior, Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and The Rock among others.

Meanwhile, current WWE Intercontinental Champion Nakamura had the following to say about the celebration of the championship he holds.
It has since been announced that Nakamura will be defending his Intercontinental Championship against the Miz during the Clash of Champions pay-per-view on September 15. The Miz is an eight-time Intercontinental Champion who is determined to claim the title for the ninth time and “restore its prestige”.
