Jake Hager Says John Cena Refused to Lose WWE Championship to Him

John Cena climbed through the ranks in WWE and went on to become a 16-time World Champion. The former WWE star had a number of Money in the Bank contracts cashed in on him and interestingly, he was able to come out on top.

Cena defeated Damien Sandow when he cashed in his contract on Monday Night Raw back in 2013. Jack Swagger was seemingly also prepared to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on the WWE Champion following his victory back at WrestleMania XXVI.

The former WWE star who’s now known as Jake Hager in AEW recently revealed during an appearance on the Talk is Jericho podcast that despite building up a believable storyline with Cena ahead of the cash-in the former World Champion refused to put him over.

“I had a little inclination, but I had no idea what was going to happen. The night before, I teased it on Raw. I hit Cena with the briefcase, I snuck up on him when he had one of his brilliant promo segments. Later, come to find out, he refused to do the job for me for the [WWE] Championship. We won’t talk about that. Ugh. ‘The most unselfish top man in the business.’”

When Swagger’s plan for Cena was unsuccessful, he turned his attention to Chris Jericho over on SmackDown and was able to defeat him to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
