The rumors are true, sixteen-time WWE world champion John Cena is now officially part of the “Fast & Furious” franchise.
Deadline is reporting that Universal, the studio that produces the “Fast & Furious” franchise, is confirming that Cena has been cast in the ninth installment of the series.
There is still no word about what part Cena will play other than the rumors that he will be in a “badass” role. The movie, currently titled just “Fast & Furious 9” is from a screenplay by Dan Casey from a story by director Justin Lin. Production is set to start this month and they are targeting a May 22, 2020 release for the film.
Cena is the second WWE superstar turned actor to be in the franchise. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has appeared in the franchise four times as Luke Hobbs. His fifth turn as the character is on the spin-off movie “Hobbs & Shaw” set to be released this August which also stars Roman Reigns.
WWE fans who are hoping to see Cena and The Rock share a screen will have to wait a little longer, as Deadline is also reporting that The Rock will not be in “Fast & Furious 9”.
It has been reported that several of the cast and crew of the “Fast & Furious” franchise are not happy with The Rock getting a spin-off before the main franchise movies are finished. So there is some talk that hiring Cena is meant to send a message to The Rock.
The casting of Cena was hinted at by original franchise star Vin Diesel on his Instagram earlier in April. Diesel is not just the original star, he is also one of the producers.
WWE.com is also reporting on Cena’s casting and Cena himself has shared the news with his fans and followers on his Twitter, calling his casting “an honor”.
