Kevin Owens made his WWE return this week on SmackDown Live.
The show opened to the contract signing between Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship match at Fastlane.
Bryan, Stephanie McMahon and Shane McMahon were in the ring. The New Day threw pancakes to the crowd while making their way to the squared circle.
Kingston got on the mic to recall his 11 years of hard work. The McMahon siblings looked appreciative.
Fans with “Kofi” chants all across the arena.
Just as Kingston was about to put his signature on the papers, out came Vince McMahon to his music.
The Chairman of Board announced that it is his duty to make the best matches possible and has thus decided that Kofi should be
replaced by a bigger box office attraction.
He then introduced the returning Kevin Owens.
The audience and The New Day were enraged as Owens walked out to the ring and sat on the same chair that Kofi was sitting on a few minutes earlier to sign the contract. Shane and Stephanie looked puzzled.
The 5-time WWE Tag Team Champions lingered in the ring for a while and exited together fuming while Kingston had a look of disbelief on his face.
A day after October’s Super Show-Down pay-per-view, WWE announced that Owens had suffered injuries to both knees that required surgery.
Since January, WWE began to air video packages for Owens and Sami Zayn (also sidelined with injury) to hype their return to the ring.
While KO was appearing on weekly TV for the last couple of weeks via video call, nobody expected him to be back this early.
Owens and Zayn were ‘fired’ from SmackDown Live after losing to Shane and Bryan at WrestleMania 34. It’s interesting to see WWE bringing The Prizefighter back on the same brand that he was fired from last year.
With Vince pulling off a last-minute ‘upset’, fans are extremely unhappy with the latest booking.
It is being speculated that Kingston would be reinstated into the title match, making it a Triple Threat showdown at Fastlane.
