The premiere episode of SmackDown on Fox ended with a shocking title change after a brutally quick match between then WWE Champion Kofi Kingston and Brock Lesnar.
The outcome of the match and the end of the popular run of Kofi Kingston as champion was met with dismay from many parts of the WWE Universe who were solidly behind the former champion.
Kingston himself took to social media to thank his fans for their support during his reign which helped him live out a childhood dream.
“As a WWE Superstar, one always hopes to experience moments in this industry that have a real and positive impact on people’s lives,” writes Kingston.
“Judging by all of these messages, I’d say that mission’s been accomplished,” he said.
Several of Kingston’s fellow superstars also commented on the end of Kingston’s reign.
The man Kingston defeated to earn the championship, Daniel Bryan tweeted his sadness at seeing Kingston’s reign end and thanked him for giving him one of his favorite career moments.
Dolph Ziggler, who was one of Kingston’s first challengers when he won the championship, also Tweeted out his respect for what he called a “hell of a run”.
Former NXT Champion Johnny Gargano also praised Kingston, calling him “a prime example of a dude with a contagious work ethic and energy.”
Meanwhile, Kingston’s brother in the New Day, Xavier Woods also had much to say about Kingston’s run as champion.
According to Woods, Kingston “created the greatest Wrestlemania moment of all time.” He also had strong negative feelings about the man who ended Kingston’s reign.
“Tonight his title reign was ended by a man who cares nothing for other people, he is reckless, and he disgusts me,” wrote Woods. “Now begins the hustle to bring that WWE heavyweight championship back to the New Day,” he added.
