Kofi Kingston was able to successfully defend his WWE Championship at Smackville this past weekend, when he overcame the threat of both Samoa Joe and Dolph Ziggler, which means that he now has a date with Randy Orton on August 11th.
Kingston challenged Orton to a match at SummerSlam this past week on SmackDown Live and interestingly, the former Champion accepted, despite the duo’s history. The Viper considers himself to be the man responsible for Kingston’s recent WWE Championship win since he was the man who injured Mustafa Ali which allowed Kingston to take his place in the Elimination Chamber match at the pay-per-view of the same name.
Kingston’s career has gone from strength to strength since then because the former mid-carder went on to defeat Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania to lift the Championship for the first time.
There were rumors that Kingston was due for a push a decade ago but a match against Orton went array and The Apex Predator headed backstage and cost Kingston the chance to become a main event level star, something that the current WWE Champion hasn’t forgotten about.
Kingston and Orton recently took to Twitter to hype up their upcoming match at The Biggest Party of the Summer, where Kingston reminded The Viper that he wasn’t the same kid that he buried back in 2009.
Orton looks to be heading towards his 14th World Championship next month at SummerSlam and even though he’s yet to respond to Kingston on Twitter, he did take to Instagram to show that he is training for the upcoming match. Even though Orton looks to already be in great shape, he could be taking the current WWE Champion a little lightly since he admitted that he was training while intoxicated.
