This week’s episode of Monday Night RAW was main-evented by a stellar match featuring WWE legend Kurt Angle and Drew McIntyre. The Scottish Psychopath put the Ankle Lock on Angle to force a submission victory.
Fans are shocked with the way WWE booked McIntyre to defeat Angle. Matter of fact little did anyone expect that a world-class athlete like Kurt would be losing to McIntyre. And that might be the passing of the torch in disguise.
Post-SummerSlam, McIntyre was slated to receive a huge push by feuding with Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. However, Reigns’ medical hiatus caused WWE to book McIntyre in a different direction. This led to Kurt being thrown under the bus this week in the main event of RAW.
It’s no secret that Vince McMahon sees McIntyre as a championship material – the Scottish Psychopath has the physique, looks, mic skills, and in-ring abilities – all that of a champion, and given his ruthless aggression, WWE is already building him as a top main eventer and future Universal/WWE Champion.
Mike Johnson noted on PW Insider Elite audio that the Angle vs. McIntyre match is similar to another famous passing of the torch match that took place more than a decade ago.
“This really was one of the biggest wins they have positioned him with thus far in the company. It’s very similar to the night that Brock Lesnar just wiped out Hulk Hogan and beat him […] they pretty much made it clear that this guy was going to be the guy one day. That was kind of the goal here with Drew McIntyre wiping out Kurt Angle and you know Kurt was very aggressive early on but as the longer the match went Drew controlled the flow of it.”
Johnson further noted that McIntyre defeating Angle in this manner is a clear statement that the Scottish pro-wrestler is a top guy in WWE now.
