It’s been a rough few years for Mike and Maria Kanellis. The duo re-signed with WWE back in 2017 and made their debut at Money in the Bank amidst rumors that they would become WWE’s next big power couple, nothing could be further from the truth.
Merely a month later, Kanellis fell out of favor with Vince McMahon and suddenly found himself only booked in dark matches and as part of Main Event, before his wife revealed that she was expecting the couple’s first child and then left on maternity leave.
Kanellis was then underutilized on 205 Live before Maria was able to return to her husband’s side last year, but rumors suggested that the duo could be heading to AEW after Maria teased a move on Twitter when their contracts were up for renewal back in the summer.
It was later reported that the couple had opted to sign new five year deals with WWE and that Maria was expecting their second child. In recent months, their storylines have revolved around Maria’s baby and Mike has been completely emasculated by his own wife over the paternity of her unborn child.
It comes as no surprise that Mike took to Twitter earlier today to reveal that he had asked for his WWE release and went into detail about the way the last few years with WWE have made him feel. It appears that this time Mike and Maria want to leave the company, but they are unable to if the company doesn’t grant his request.
WWE granted Hideo Itami his release when it was requested last year, but refused to allow Luke Harper to leave and join their rivals when he publically proclaimed that he wanted to go, so this is something that WWE will have to weigh up and decide whether or not they will allow Mike to leave and strengthen the ranks for their rivals.
