Nikki Cross has come a long way from her main roster debut. From being almost forgotten to teaming up with – and winning gold – with Alexa Bliss, she now has a WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship match.
Cross gave an interview with Rick Ucchino of Sportskeeda ahead of her Extreme Rules championship match against Bayley. Cross talked about her career and the development of her character and she gave credit to a rather surprising source for her main roster persona.
According to Cross, veteran commentator Michael Cole helped her develop her current on-screen character. During an early segment where she was invited to do commentary during a match between Alexa Bliss and Asuka, Cole encouraged her to “be herself”.
Cross’s antics on commentary and outside the ring – jumping around, dancing, and yelling encouragements or insults – are regarded with some amusement, though it’s more on-screen bemusement from Cole.
“Michael was very encouraging in bringing that out,” said Cross. “He’s very nurturing and it just made me feel very comfortable.”
“Michael Cole is a national treasure and he must be protected at all costs,” declared Cross.
