Two-time World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler made his WWE return this past May by viciously attacking Kofi Kingston and earning himself a WWE Title match at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia.
Ziggler’s surprise return on the May 21 episode of SmackDown Live was the first time the WWE Universe had seen him on TV since the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in January. It is to be noted that The Showoff lasted until the final three in the Men’s Rumble match.
Ziggler’s absence from WWE TV for four straight months led to the assumption that he won’t be stepping in the ring again. After all, the 38-year-old Superstar is a handsome stand-up comedian and can choose to quit wrestling anytime in pursuit of Hollywood.
During a recent interview with News-Press, Ziggler talked about his recent WWE return and admitted to being nervous about stepping in the ring after his hiatus.
“It was the first time I’ve had a vacation in almost 14 years. I needed a little time off and I asked for it. It was like 2½ months or something. And by the way, during that 2½ months, I still worked out once or twice a day and got a ton of stand-up comedy in.”
“I was doing a ton of traveling. I was a little bit nervous getting back in the ring. But someone who’s an old pro like me, who’s done it for so long, the muscle memory was still there. Everything worked out. Maybe about two minutes in, I was right back to being me and getting everything accomplished in there and jumping high and running the ropes and going, ‘OK, here we go!’”
Ziggler also revealed his immediate plans – he is currently focused on one and one thing only – to dethrone Kingston and prove that he is the better man.
“…what I focus on now is winning that title from Kofi, because it means more to me in beating him to prove how good I am.”
Kingston’s successful title defense against Ziggler at Super ShowDown makes it interesting to see whether WWE has any intention of giving the blonde Superstar another shot at the gold down the line.
