This week on SmackDown Live, General Manager Paige announced that Becky Lynch would be defending her Women’s Championship in the first ever TLC women’s match at the pay-per-view of the same name.
Charlotte was named as her opponent as well as the added twist of the winner of the main event Battle Royal making the match into a triple threat. Asuka won the match and has now been added to her first Women’s Championship match since the summer, but it’s believed that the former NXT Women’s Championship was only added to the match to take the pressure of Lynch.
Dave Meltzer noted on The Wrestling Observer, that The Empress of Tomorrow has been added to the match because Lynch has only recently been cleared.
“Who knows what kind of condition Becky is in and they’re putting her in a match with tables, ladders, and chairs coming off of a concussion. I mean it’s very possible that the reason Asuka’s even in the match is so that her and Charlotte can carry the load here and not put Becky at risk,” he said Ringsidenews.
Asuka has been on the backfoot on SmackDown Live ever since she lost to Charlotte at WrestleMania and ended her undefeated streak, but this could be her chance to push back into the Women’s Championship picture and prove that she still has what it takes to compete with the best in the division.
There is also the added fact that Asuka could be handed the Women’s Championship if Ronda Rousey decides to interfere, which would then give Lynch and Flair something to challenge Rousey for in the coming months, heading into WrestleMania.
