Becky Lynch was forced to drop the SmackDown Women’s Championship back at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs in the first ever Women’s TLC match against Asuka and Charlotte.
Asuka has been the main Champion on SmackDown Live over the past few weeks, but will now face Lynch for the Women’s Championship at the Royal Rumble as the former Champion looks to regain her title in the build up to WrestleMania.
It was a shock that Lynch dropped her title at TLC, since she was the hottest thing in the division for a number of months after her Survivor Series match was canceled because of a botch from Nia Jax.
Bryan Alvarez touched on this as part of the most recent episode of The Wrestling Observer, where he pointed out that Lynch needed to lose the title in order for the upcoming storyline to make sense, since she is still expected to step into a rivalry with Ronda Rousey heading into WrestleMania.
“Asuka being slid to make it a three-way and winning the title, I mean there’s a reason they did that. They’re going with Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch and Charlotte in some form or fashion between now and Mania. So in order to do that they wanted the belt off of both of them so Asuka ended up with the belt.”
“Like I don’t expect Becky Lynch to win that title at the Royal Rumble. I don’t know what the finish is gonna be, I don’t know if Ronda will interfere I mean she’s gonna be there so she could,” he said via Ringsidenews.
Both Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch will be in title matches in the Rumble and at the same venue for the first time since TLC, so the results could be interesting.
