Ronda Rousey has pushed the Raw Women’s Championship into the spotlight over the past few months, but with Alexa Bliss on the sidelines and Nia Jax already defeated a few weeks back, Rousey needed a new challenger for the Royal Rumble.
There was talk towards the end of the year that Charlotte and Becky Lynch would be allowed to make the switch over to challenge for the Raw Women’s Championship, but it was made clear last night on Raw that this wasn’t going to be the case.
Instead, Ronda Rousey seemingly made it clear that she had a lot of praise for Sasha Banks as part of her appearance on Alexa Bliss’ Moment of Bliss talk show, which wasn’t received well by Nia Jax.
After the two women got in each other’s face, it was announced that a match would take place later on Raw and the winner would then face Rousey for the Raw Women’s Championship at Royal Rumble.
Sasha Banks was able to withstand a lot of abuse throughout the match before she latched on The Bank Statement and picked up a huge win to kick off 2019.
Last year’s Rumble didn’t feature any Women’s Championship matches, so it’s unclear if the women involved in these matches as challengers will be given the opportunity to pull double duty like many of the men.
What is known is that Ronda Rousey and Sasha Banks will now face off for the first time for the Women’s Championship and this could well be Rousey’s toughest test as Champion since Banks has already lifted that title on four different occasions since she was promoted to the main roster back in 2016.
