Braun Strowman has been officially pulled from the WWE Universal Championship match against Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble.
The announcement wasn’t made directly; like always, the Superstar concerned was written off through a scripted segment.
This week on Monday Night RAW, Strowman pursued Baron Corbin backstage and with information from Elias, rocked Vince McMahon‘s limousine in which The Lone Wolf was hiding. The Chairman showed up and not only fined The Monster a whopping $100,000 but also pulled him from his scheduled title match at Royal Rumble.
On PWInsider audio, Mike Johnson discussed the matter and revealed the real reason why Braun was removed from the January 27th PPV.
“Why isn’t Braun Strowman in this match? Well, the obvious reason is that he’s just not physically cleared by WWE’s medical staff to do a big heavy duty match with Brock Lesnar.”
“However…they also didn’t want Braun to get beaten by Brock and they were not planning on putting the belt on Braun Strowman at the Royal Rumble. So they kind of painted themselves into a corner and then they painted themselves out of that corner somehow.”
It was reported last week that Strowman was yet to receive medical clearance from WWE’s doctors but the belief was that he would be ready in time for Royal Rumble. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case for babyface Braun has been written off the upcoming show.
Although The Monster was likely to lose against Lesnar at Chase Field, it is now a given that The Beast will retain his title against Finn Bálor who earned his spot in the championship match by defeating John Cena, Drew McIntyre and Corbin in a Fatal 4-Way on RAW.
The Extraordinary Man is reportedly in for a big push, but a loss at Rumble would make it interesting to see whether WWE plans to keep him in the title picture in the build-up to WrestleMania 35 given he recently teased a match with The Undertaker that has already started gaining steam.
