One of the biggest shocks in WWE this week was when Mick Foley announced that Stephanie McMahon had given him the opportunity to be part of the main event match at this weekend’s Hell in a Cell event.
The WWE Hall of Famer will be calling the shots in the Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman which coincides with the 20th anniversary of the brutal match between The Undertaker and The Hardcore Legend, where he was thrown off the top of the structure.
Even though the timing of this announcement is considered to be coincidental, it appears that there is actually a much simpler reason as to why Mick Foley will be the special guest referee on Sunday night.
Much like Mick Foley’s run as General Manager of Monday Night RAW was a promotion for Holey Foley, Mick once again has another feature-length one-man show on the WWE Network following Hell in a Cell this weekend and this is perfect promotion for the show.
According to CageSideSeats, Foley isn’t expected to take any bumps as part of the match since he only recently underwent hip surgery and WWE are remaining focused on maintaining his health throughout his time on screen. Hip surgery was the reason why Foley was replaced as General Manager of RAW and it isn’t yet known what his physical state is following such an intense procedure.
Vince McMahon is a genius when it comes to promoting the WWE Network and once again he has managed to get this past the WWE Universe, who will tune into Foley’s new one-man show in Pittsburgh following Hell in a Cell without second guessing it.
