Last night on Raw, Trish Stratus and Lita returned as a team and it was announced that instead of Stratus facing Alexa Bliss in a singles match and Lita going one-on-one with Mickie James, the plans would now see the two WWE Hall of Famers team up to take on Bliss and James instead.
Early reports suggested that the plans could have changed because of Alexa Bliss’ recent injury and because WWE wanted her to work a lighter match, but it appears that this isn’t the case. Bliss’ injury could definitely be a factor, but according to The Wrestling Observer, this was the original plan.
“So the actual story behind this is that it was always going to be a tag match. But as silly as this sounds they thought that Trish Stratus vs Alexa Bliss if they announce that match it will sell tons of tickets. So they wanted that at,” he said via RingsideNews.
“I don’t know if they didn’t want Trish in a singles match and once again Alexa is hurt but it has not changed because of Alexa’s injury, this was the original plan.”
“So I’m guessing that just felt — maybe they didn’t want Lita to do a singles match. Whatever it is, it boggles my mind that they thought by announcing because they couldn’t announce Ronda Rousey vs Nikki Bella so they figured they needed a big match to make people buy tickets and the one they decided was the big match was Alexa Bliss vs Trish Stratus.”
“Now that Ronda Rousey and Nikki Bella are out there and they’re doing that match now they can revert back to the tag team match which they figured was a weaker draw.”
Whilst this is a shock, the fact that Mickie and Alexa have been working as a team over the past few months means that this would have been a viable option for WWE regardless of Bliss’ injury.
