Legendary WWE high-flyer and “Master of 619”, Rey Mysterio made a surprise return at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event in January, 2018. Although it was a one-off appearance, Mysterio stayed in the ring for 9 mins 39 seconds after entering the ring at #27 and before getting eliminated by Finn Bálor.
The 3-time World Champion is now set to return to WWE this week on SmackDown 1000.
Mysterio’s long-awaited return to the company will see him hit the ropes as a regular in-ring performer. The reason why it took so long for Rey and WWE to ink a deal is because of the negotiations that saw Mysterio opting for a light schedule.
The 43-year old luchador will go 1-on-1 with WWE United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura on SmackDown 1000. Given Rey’s contribution in WWE for over a decade, the returning former World Heavyweight Champion definitely deserves a dream WWE World Cup Qualifying Match on his first night back in the company.
Ahead of SmackDown 1000 that takes place this Tuesday, Mysterio told Al Arabiya English:
“There is a new roster on board and there are so many matches out there that the fans would love to see and that I would really enjoy.
“AJ Styles vs Rey Mysterio, Finn Bálor vs Rey Mysterio, not to mention he was the one who threw me out in the Royal Rumble.
“So no hard feelings, but if I ever do come back, I would go after him.”
It appears that Mysterio wants to take on Bálor for the Irishman ended his dream of headlining WrestleMania 34.
The winner of Mysterio vs. Nakamura will advance to WWE Crown Jewel on November 2, 2018 to compete in the inaugural 8-Man WWE World Cup Tournament, which will determine the best in the world.
WWE Superstars John Cena, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, Seth Rollins and Dolph Ziggler have already advanced in the tournament and will be joined by 2 more Superstars from the RAW and SmackDown brand.
