It’s official, Rey Mysterio is making his WWE return on SmackDown 1000.
According to an official press release on WWE.com:
“SmackDown 1000 now has another number of significance attached to it. That number is 619 because Rey Mysterio is back!”
SmackDown 1000, airs on October 16, at 8/7 central on the USA Network. It is a celebration of the blue brand’s 1000th episode since it debuted back on April 29, 1999.
Mysterio, as the press release reminds us, was a big part of SmackDown in its early days and was one of the superstars who helped elevate the blue brand. Mysterio became part of Team Blue during the first brand split back in March 2002.
Mysterio’s return to the WWE has been teased for weeks. He left the company in 2015 after nearly 13 years, during which he held most of the major titles: The WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the WWE Championship, The WWE Intercontinental Championship, the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, and the WWE Tag Team Championship.
Since his release from the WWE, he has been working with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, Lucha Underground, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
He made two surprise entries during WWE Royal Rumble matches this year, during the 2018 Royal Rumble and the Greatest Royal Rumble, sparking rumors of a return to the WWE. The rumors were further fueled by his inclusion as a pre-order bonus character on the WWE 2K19 game.
On September 19, it was confirmed that Mysterio and the WWE had come to an agreement and he had signed a two-year deal to return.
While Mysterio’s return to SmackDown is now official, there is still no word of what he will be doing on SmackDown 1000 or what his next program may be.
