Rey Mysterio suffered an eye injury at the hands of Seth Rollins a couple of weeks ago on Monday Night RAW The masked veteran was reportedly in critical condition, but in reality, the injury angle was a means to write Mysterio off of television since his contract expires in a few weeks and he’s yet to sign a new deal with the company. However, now, Mr. 619 is apparently going to hang up his boots next Monday night at the Performance Center in Orlando.
On the latest edition of RAW, it was announced that Mysterio will announce his retirement next week. The Monday Night Messiah will host Mr. 619’s supposed farewell ceremony.
During his promo this week, Rollins mentioned Dominick Mysterio which is interesting considering how tightly scripted WWE promos are and the fact that The Messiah actually name-dropped Rey’s son makes it evident that the company is brewing something for the young talent.
On PW Insider Elite audio, Mike Johnson noted that WWE likely included Dominick’s name for a reason.
“Since they mentioned Dominick Mysterio it will be interesting to see if he shows up to defend his father because we know he’s been on WWE’s radar or in their orbit so to speak.”
Dominick could very well be on the receiving end of a brutal beatdown at the hands of Rollins. It was further noted that the retirement angle could feature Mysterio working for his medical clearance. Rollins assaulting Dominick would give Rey sufficient motivation to recover and exact revenge on The Messiah in the near future.
From the looks of it, the retirement ceremony is most likely an angle to boost viewership while allowing Mysterio vs Rollins to gain steam ahead of Backlash. The Ultimate Underdog has a 10-month out-clause on his contract and WWE will never feature him in a long-term storyline if he hasn’t re-signed.
