Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio have a storied history dating all the way back to the 2006 Royal Rumble where Mysterio last eliminated Orton to win the match before The Viper later defeated him at No Way Out to take away his opportunity to wrestle for the World title at WrestleMania.

Mysterio was later added back to the match and it was made a triple threat between Mysterio, Orton and Kurt Angle, where Mysterio walked out as World Champion, but it is thought that there isn’t a lot of love lost between these two men and more than a decade later, they collided on SmackDown Live.

It was a fantastic match that included an impressive reversal into an RKO from Orton, but it also saw Mysterio unmasked somewhat inadvertently. Orton beat down Mysterio using a chair following their match before his mask came off in the midst of the action.

It was thought that this was some kind of mistake, but Orton then went on to pick up the mask and leave with it lifted above his head whilst referees rushed to Mysterio to cover up his face with a towel.

Interestingly, WWE didn’t pick up Mysterio’s face on camera after he was unmasked, but they did allow Orton to leave with his mask which means that there could be something building between these two men moving forward.

Mysterio left WCW more than two decades ago because he was unmasked in a match, but since his face wasn’t actually shown this time, it is unknown if it’s the same kind of storyline that WWE is going for.

Could the company be looking to bring back the old mask vs hair gimmick for Orton and Mysterio moving forward?
