On the latest edition of AEW Dynamite, former WWE Superstar Ricky Starks debuted against Cody in the TNT Title open challenge. The Executive Vice President retained his title while Starks secured a contract.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that Starks’ TNT Title match was actually a tryout. The former NWA World Television Champion impressed Tony Khan so much so that he was signed immediately after his match.
“During the match, they were so impressed — this was his tryout. So I mean like the deal of — he was signed probably after the match because this was taped on Thursday of last week.”
“But, he was — this was not like he was signed and then they debuted him… this was a tryout and midway through the match he looked so impressive that they came up with a program for him and signed him.”
It appears that AEW executives have already figured out a program for Starks. What’s interesting is that Starks wasn’t just signed to fill in the power-packed roster.
What lies in store for Ricky is anyone’s guess, but it’s safe to assume that AEW can turn him into a bigger name in the coming years if he’s able to live up to their expectations.
