Royal Rumble is now less than a month away and whilst two Championship matches have already been announced for the show, it appears that much of the card is still yet to be decided.
Dave Meltzer discussed this on the latest episode of The Wrestling Observer, where he talked about the fact that Asuka vs Becky Lynch for the SmackDown Women’s Championship was already decided for the Royal Rumble but Vince McMahon changed his mind.
Paige was then forced to take the fall for a match that had already been announced but was then seemingly changed. This doesn’t bode well for the rest of the card as the first pay-per-view of the year lurks on the horizon.
“So they’re going to do meetings this week to come up with a Rumble card.”
“Originally the [Asuka vs Becky Lynch] match was happening, but then Vince decided that he wanted to revamp the card and they were, when they taped Main Event it was gonna air later in the week. At that time, the plan was to announce the match with Asuka and Becky Lynch on Tuesday’s SmackDown, but during that interim period.”
“Vince decided to change his mind so they never announced that match on that SmackDown. Not saying that match won’t happen but it was definitely off when that show came on,” he said via Ringsidenews.”
It appears that the women’s matches are the ones causing the biggest headache for the creative team since the Universal Championship and Cruiserweight Championship matches are already set.
The women have been one of the biggest parts of the company all year and this could be a sign of things to come throughout 2019.
