The current Universal Champion, Seth Rollins, was named the top wrestler in the world for 2019 by Pro Wrestling Illustrated. The iconic PWI 500 list, which names the top 500 wrestlers of the world (in kayfabe), was released this week.
Seth Rollins has had a stellar run in WWE in 2019, having won the Royal Rumble, had a mini-Shield reunion, defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, teamed up with his fiance Becky Lynch and conquered the Beast once again at SummerSlam.
The PWI 500 list is compiled on the basis of a wrestler’s career in the last twelve months, and Rollins’ career graph in that time period is nothing short of spectacular. Rollins is followed by fellow WWE wrestlers Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles, both of whom held the WWE title in the last twelve months.
Current WWE Champion Kofi Kingston follows his predecessors at #4, and IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada is ranked #5. Seth Rollins was quite happy with the tag of the best wrestler in the world and said that this is a dream come true for him.
“As difficult as it can be, this is all I ever wanted to be in this position, to be having this conversation with you talking about being the absolute best wrestler on the entire planet. I don’t think there is a single part of me that would trade any second of it.”
Rollins previously topped the list in 2015, during his first run with the WWE Championship. The only other WWE wrestlers to top this list twice are Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, Bret Hart, and Rollins’ former mentor, Triple H. Rollins felt honored to be in a list of elite (no pun intended) wrestlers.
“Those guys obviously are elite. They are in a class all their own. They are Hall of Famers. So, to be mentioned amongst them is pretty special.”
WWE released a statement congratulating the Beastslayer for his achievement. AEW star Kenny Omega was ranked #1 in 2018.
