WWE is requesting an extension from the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Trademark Trial and Appeal Board to settle a trademark dispute over the use of the phrase “Stone Cold”.
WWE is currently trying to negotiate a settlement with Stone Cold LLC, which is a company headed by NFL’s Chris Jones.
Jones has released a soda line that is called “Stone Cold Jones”. WWE is contesting this as they say that the soda line’s name infringes on two of their trademarks, “Stone Cold Steve Austin” and “Stone Cold” which is associated with WWE legend Steve Austin.
WWE filed a complaint with the USPTO in September. Stone Cold LLC responded in October stating that the name is widely recognized as pertaining to their head, NFL Chris Jones. They believe that there will be no confusion with WWE’s trademark.
On December 15, 2020, WWE had filed a motion to suspend proceedings with the USPTO Trademark Trial and Appeal Board for 30 days while they negotiated a settlement with Stone Cold LLC.
As of January 20, 2021, the negotiations are apparently still ongoing as WWE filed for an extension for another 30 days.
If no settlement has been reached between the two parties, the case will resume by February 15.
