One of the reasons that some professional wrestlers have given for having positive experiences with AEW is that it still allows them to pursue “outside interests”.
While this is usually brought up when AEW performers are allowed to work other shows and promotions, in the case of AEW’s Sonny Kiss, it was the opportunity to finish his college studies while still being in the active roster.
Kiss gave an interview to Sports Illustrated this June where he said that he was a “senior” studying fitness training, fitness science, and kinesiology. During the interview, he noted that AEW President Tony Khan was “supportive of other endeavors” and provided them with “a great schedule”.
“Even after Dark, I’ll go back to the hotel and do my homework for a few hours. Once you start to master time management, things become a little easier,” said Kiss about studying and being an AEW wrestler.
Kiss signed with AEW back in February 2019. Before that, he was mainly known for his work on Lucha Underground. He is allied with Joey Janela and the two tag often, though Kiss works as a singles performer as well.
Most notably, he has challenged Cody Rhodes for the AEW TNT Championship and was Janela’s replacement on the first round of the recently concluded AEW World Championship contender tournament against eventual winner Kenny Omega.
Fellow AEW talents sent out tweets supporting Kiss.
