The IIconics defeated The Boss N Hug Connection to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 35 but it’s been over two months that Peyton Royce and Billie Kay haven’t faced any worthy challengers as the reigning champions.
The Kabuki Warriors managed by Paige are next-in-line for a shot at the tag team gold and fans are relieved that Asuka and Kairi Sane are stepping up to make the women’s tag team division interesting once again.
However, there’s a good reason why WWE couldn’t come up with a worthy duo for Royce and Kay all the way since April. After all, the original plan was for The Bella Twins to feud with The IIconics for the titles post-WrestleMania 35.
During a recent interview with Wrestling News, Nikki Bella revealed that The Bella Twins were supposed to return to fight The IIconics for the titles after April 7.
“Brie and I, we were gonna come back and fight for the tag titles after WrestleMania and we were gonna go against The IIconics for a few months.”
Nikki’s health condition eventually caused WWE to nix the plan all of a sudden. A herniated disc and cyst on the brain forced the 2-time former Divas Champion to retire from the ring last month.
“Deep down inside, I kept having this weird feeling that I needed to get an x-ray on my neck because for a while I wasn’t feeling okay. Brie knows that in December after Evolution, I just kept telling her that I feel off and my head doesn’t feel right…”
At WWE Evolution, Nikki wrestled Ronda Rousey for the RAW Women’s Championship in the main event of the show. This was the last match in the 35-year-old Superstar’s career.
The Bella Twins winning the Women’s Tag Team Championship would have been one of the most cherished storylines in the history of WWE, but unfortunately, that will never happen now that both twins are done with their in-ring careers.
