This weekend, WWE officially announced two new matches for The Great American Bash after the superstars went against each other on Twitter.
Current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Sasha Banks will face the current NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai in a non-title singles match. The match came about after Banks posted a video on Twitter on Saturday challenging Shirai to a match.
The bad blood between the two women stems from when Banks and her tag team partner, current SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley, went to NXT to face Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox.
Banks and Bayley beat Blackheart and Nox to retain their championships but were chased out of the ring by Shirai, who declared that NXT was “hers.”
Shirai responded to Banks’ challenge and the exchange was noticed by the NXT General Manager William Regal who made the match official for the Great American Bash.
On Sunday, Oney Lorcan tweeted that he wanted a match against Timothy Thatcher. Lorcan threatened if he didn’t get a match with Thatcher he would start “kicking everybody’s ass.”
Lorcan’s Tweet caught the attention of Regal, who Tweeted out that he was making a match between Lorcan and Thatcher on the first day of the Great American Bash.
Aside from the matches announced this weekend, there are currently three more matches on the card.
The Undisputed ERA’s Roderick Strong is facing off against Dexter Lumis in a Strap Match, while Rhea Ripley is facing off against Aliyah, accompanied by Robert Strong. The match between Ripley and Aliyah includes the stipulation that is Ripley loses, she will need to join the Robert Stone Brand.
Meanwhile, there will be a women’s Fatal 4-Way match to determine the next contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. This match will feature Tegan Nox, Dakota Kai, Candice LeRae, and Mia Yim.
Great American Bash was announced as a two-week event taking place during the July 1 and July 8 episodes of NXT. The announcement came shortly after All Elite Wrestling announced that its upcoming Fyter Fest would be held during the same nights.
