Tommaso Ciampa is currently the NXT Champion after he defeated Aleister Black on an episode of NXT a few weeks ago.
The big spoiler here is that it will be announced in the coming weeks on NXT that Ciampa will defend his Championship in a triple threat match against old foe Johnny Gargano and Aleister Black at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn on August 18th.
It has recently been reported that Black was forced to undergo minor surgery and was expected to still be able to fulfill his commitments in Brooklyn in less than two weeks time, but Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer recently reported that WWE could be set to add an interesting competitor to the match in his place.
According to RingSideNews, Meltzer claimed that his source stated that officials could be planning to put Riddle in the match and even go as far as to allow the former MMA star to lift the title in his debut match as a way of creating an instant star on the brand.
It hasn’t officially been announced yet, but Matt Riddle is known to have signed a contract with WWE and was expected to be one of the stars at ringside for Takeover in Brooklyn, but this would definitely be a huge swerve if this was the plan that the company went with instead.
Riddle has been working on the Independent Circuit over the past few years and is a huge acquisition for WWE, one that isn’t expected to remain in NXT for very long so this would be a fantastic introduction for him.
Of course, of yet it is unknown as to whether or not WWE will add Riddle to the match since it is dependent on if Black is cleared in time.
