WWE is continuing to trademark names and phrases that are related to current and retired talents.
Heel by Nature is reporting that this week, they have filed an additional trademark for a term that is associated with WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin.
In a filing dated November 24 with The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), WWE is seeking to trademark “Austin 3:16”.
The trademark filed on November 24 is for use in “merchandise”, namely games and toys.
This is actually the second trademark for the term “Austin 3:16” that WWE has filed this year. Last month, WWE filed a trademark dated October 1 with the USPTO, for use in “entertainment services”.
WWE reportedly has three current live trademarks for the term, which has been associated with Austin and his WWE run since the 90s.
Austin first used the term during his storyline with Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Austin had defeated Roberts during the 1996 King of the Ring tournament and cut a promo on Roberts, who had a habit of quoting bible verses during their rivalry.
“Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!” declared Austin. And thus a catchphrase was born.
