This week’s episode of NXT saw a triple-threat tie-breaker in the Group A of the Interim Cruiserweight Championship tournament, with Kushida, Drake Maverick, and Jake Atlas squaring off to determine who will face El Hijo de Fantasma for the title.
Drake Maverick, who was released by WWE on April 15 as part of the company-wide cuts, won the match in a controversial finish. Kushida and Maverick both felt that they won the match before the referee raised the arm of the 205 Live General Manager to officially declare him as the winner.
Maverick and Kushida had a confrontation backstage, where Maverick promised to let Kushida have the first shot at the title after he wins it.
The finals for the tourney, which was initially believed to take place at Takeover: In Your House, will be taking place at next week’s episode of NXT instead.
Maverick has not signed a contract with the company yet, and it remains to be seen whether WWE rehires him after his exceptional performances throughout the tournament.
William Regal also announced another match for NXT Takeover: In Your House, as the NXT Champion will take on Velveteen Dream in what is rumored to be a Cinematic Match, similar to The Boneyard Match and the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
The match will also be Dream’s last shot at Cole, as long as he is the champion, after Dream suffered a loss against Cole a few weeks ago.
Cole celebrated the one-year anniversary of his NXT Championship reign this week. Regal announced that the matchup will take place at a different location, which will be suitable for Cole and Dream’s heated rivalry.
Johnny Gargano vs NXT North American Champion Keith Lee was also confirmed for the PPV this week.
NXT Takeover: In Your House will air on June 7th from Full Sail University.
