Drake Maverick‘s fairytale run in the Interim Cruiserweight Championship run finally came to an end this week on NXT after he lost the tournament finals against El Hijo de Fantasma.
The mystery superstars who have been abducting several NXT stars over the past few weeks appeared at ringside and were taken out by Maverick. Fantasma took advantage and pinned him for the victory.
The luchador became the new NXT Cruiserweight Champion, as WWE dropped the interim champion from their programming this week. Jordan Devlin, the original champion, hasn’t relinquished the title yet, but WWE is referring to Fantasma as the new champion.
Maverick was released by WWE during the company-wide layoff on April 15, and his run was scheduled to end after his exit in the tournament. A devastated Maverick was given a show of respect by those in attendance, considering this was his last match in a WWE ring.
However, WWE COO Triple H appeared on the ramp and offered a fresh contract to the former 205 Live General Manager, who signed it and officially rejoined the brand.
NXT’s tag-team division received a boost as Breezango made their return to WWE programming. Fandango, who has been out of injury since December last year, returned with Tyler Breeze, as the duo defeated The Undisputed Era and Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch to become the new number one contenders.
Fandango’s elbow injury kept him on the shelf for six months as Breeze appeared on 205 Live and NXT in singles matches.
After their victory, NXT Tag Team Champions Imperium made their way out and stared them down. The Indus Sher, with their manager Malcolm Bivens, also returned to NXT and joined the stare-off, suggesting a three-way for the titles in the near future.
The Indus Sher debuted in April and made their debuts against Ever Rise, but haven’t been seen since.
