WWE NXT: First Match For NXT Takeover Announced, Drake Maverick Continues in the CW Tournament

The Interim Cruiserweight Championship tournament had the final round of group stage matches this week. The tournament had a round-robin format with the leaders of both groups advancing to the finals. El Hijo del Fantasma, a newbie in the NXT system, topped Group B with a record of 2-1. Akira Tozawa also had a 2-1 record in the same group, but Fantasma advanced to the finals based on H2H record.

Elsewhere, Group A saw a three-way tie at the top between Drake Maverick, Kushida, and Jake Atlas. Tony Nese finished with a 0-3 record in the group, while the other three superstars shared the top spot.

Maverick was released from WWE as part of the company-wide cuts last month but was allowed to work this tournament. Maverick has massively impressed in this tournament, and a title win leading to a rehire could make him a much-loved babyface in NXT.

The three stars will face off in a triple threat next week, and the winner will take on Fantasma. It could very well be Maverick’s last match in WWE for the time being, and it remains to be seen if WWE brings him back.

The finals of the tournament will most likely take place at the NXT Takeover: In Your House event. The current CW champion, Jordan Devlin, has been out of action due to the ban on international travel. Devlin, who is primarily an NXT UK star, defeated Angel Garza for the title a few months ago.

Elsewhere, the first match for the return of the iconic PPV was confirmed, as Karrion Kross will be taking on former NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa. Kross has impressed since his debut alongside his real-life girlfriend, Scarlett Bordeaux, and this will be his Takeover debut.

Johnny Gargano vs Keith Lee was also set in motion this week and could take place on the PPV. Rhea Ripley, Io Shirai, and Charlotte Flair will most likely compete in a triple threat for the NXT Women’s Championship.
